The Australian language is a mix of English and slang. It is spoken by Aussies everywhere and called Aussie lingo.
It is normal for Australians to shorten names by adding a ‘za’ at the end as in Barry – Bazza, Sharon – Shazza, Garry – Gazza or an ‘o’ as in Brendan – Brendo, Robert – Robbo, Steven – Stevo. If your name gets shortened it means you have been accepted by the group.
Australian’s also change the ending of words and add an ‘a’. River becomes riva, colour becomes culla. It is also common to leave out vowels from the middle of words – Toronto is Tronto, Canberra is Canbra and Karratha is Kratha.
Some words are even changed to rhymes that totally make no sense unless you are in the know. Dogs Eye – meat pie and Tin Lids – kids (children) are just two of many.
Needless to say, the aussie language is easily recognised the world over. Only in Straya, mate.
